Employee Spotlight: Gaby Jimenez – Finding Community in Every Shift At Urban Value Corner Store

At Urban Value Corner Store, our purpose is simple: to improve the resident living experience, one transaction at a time. That purpose comes to life through team members like Gaby Jimenez, who see every hello, every quick chat, and every checkout as a chance to build community.

Gaby joined Urban Value looking for something more than a “job.” She wanted a place where her voice mattered and where everyday interactions could make a real difference. Today, she’s doing exactly that—creating a welcoming atmosphere for residents and reminding all of us how meaningful small moments can be.

Urban Value Corner Store's Gaby Jimenez

What drew you to Urban Value Corner Store?

“I had been working in a large corporate job for a while and got tired of feeling such a disconnect from the higher-ups. I wanted a place where communication was real—where everyone, including corporate, actually talked to each other. Urban Value caught my eye because it emphasized two things I care about: improving communities and valuing employees. It felt like a company where I wouldn’t just be a number, but someone whose work—and ideas—could have an impact.”

What is the best part of the job?

“The best part of this job is feeling like you belong to a community. You get to know your customers so well that you become part of their daily routine, and you start to realize you play a small but vital role in their lives. I love that this job is a reminder that even though people come from all kinds of backgrounds, we all have a lot more in common than we think once we start talking. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how simple interactions—a quick joke, remembering someone’s usual snack, or asking about their day—can make a difference. This job makes those moments possible.”

What is your background, and how does it help you at Urban Value Corner Store?

“I’m a college student, and before Urban Value I worked as a pet care specialist. That role taught me a lot about paying attention to detail and caring for others. I had to monitor many different types of animals, each with specific needs, and I also spent a lot of time educating people on how to care for their future pets. That experience helped me learn to listen—really listen—to people’s concerns, questions, and worries. At Urban Value, customers often come in wanting to vent about their day. Because of my background, I’m comfortable talking to many different types of people and offering a bit of comfort, even when they’re stressed or upset. Sometimes they just need someone to acknowledge them, and I’m glad I get to be that person.”

What advice would you give to future Urban Value team members?

“Enjoy the connections you’ll make with your customers—and work hard to support your teammates. The communities around this company are very uplifting. They help you feel more connected to people in general, not just as ‘customers,’ but as human beings. I’d also tell future team members that Urban Value does a great job recognizing effort and hard work. Your ideas are heard here, not dismissed. Upper management truly listens to suggestions on how to make each store better.
So my advice is:
  • Do your best—your effort really matters.

  • Support your coworkers—you’re part of a team.

  • Speak up—your voice can help shape your store. And most importantly,

  • Enjoy the job and the people you’ll meet. You really can make an impact here.

Anything else you’d like to add?

“I value this job because, in this day and age, a lot of people have grown isolated—especially in cities. Our store serves as a small but meaningful outlet for community to grow. In my time working here, I’ve met some of the nicest people, and I’m truly grateful for that. I never would’ve thought to talk to strangers before, but now I don’t hesitate to connect with people, even if it’s just for a brief moment. Those little moments add up—and I think they matter more than we realize.”

Thank you, Gaby, for reminding us that convenience isn’t just about products on shelves—it’s about connection, empathy, and showing up for the people right outside our doors.
